Synopsis
Through the centuries, Jakarta (formerly known as Batavia, or Betawi) has been a melting pot of cultures. It is no surprise, then, that Betawi music and dance are a fusion of diverse influences, giving rise to the unique Betawi style. The music accompanying the dances includes gamelan and Arabic instruments, while Chinese influences can often be heard and seen in Betawi dance. The dances are generally dynamic, fluid, and slightly playful.
